Bridgetown Hub @ Global Shapers Community
World Economic Forum
Jan 2020 - Present
Born out of the World Economic Forum, the Global Shapers Community is a network of inspiring young people under the age of 30 working together to address local, regional, and global challenges. With more than 14,000 members, the Global Shapers Community spans 456 city-based hubs in 150 countries.
In each city, teams of Shapers self-organize to create projects that address the needs of their community. Projects are wide-ranging – from responding to disasters and combating poverty, to fighting climate change and building inclusive communities.
Elected by Global Shapers to lead Bridgetown Hub. Here, I set the projects for the year, and oversee activities, recruitment partnerships.
Invited to the Global Shapers Annual Curators Meeting hosted by WEF HQ in Geneva.
The Curatorship ensures hub members are united by a shared sense of purpose and works together to create change. Specifically, the Curatorship is responsible for:
-
Establishing governance structures including governing documents and membership expectations consistent with the Community Charter and Onboarding Guide. They develop ways to ensure transparency, build trust and create a responsive governance structure within the hub.
-
Developing roles and responsibilities to achieve distributed hub leadership either by election or appointment (i.e. a treasurer or project, recruitment, impact or sustainability officers).
-
Helping each hub member to see why the Global Shapers Community was created, what we stand for and how we work together to amplify the voice of young people and create change.
-
Recruiting new members that are diverse in terms of expertise, education, income and race, and onboarding them to TopLink. They maintain the required 20-50 active Shapers.
-
Ensure that every hub member has an up-to-date TopLink bio (max 200 words) written in 3rd person to increase their chances of being considered for World Economic Forum events and initiatives.
-
Ensuring the hub is a safe space for each member. They intervene when members do not live up to the Code of Conduct or Anti-Harassment Policy; listen to and amplify the voices of all hub members—especially those often marginalized—and create accessible and safe spaces so that everyone can participate in hub projects, activities and events; and make sure projects, meetings, retreats and admin are viewed through an anti-racist lens, ensuring accessibility and inclusion.
-
Maintaining a standard of excellence in the hub. They facilitate collaboration in the hub, across hubs and with HQ to achieve community objectives.
-
Organizing regular hub meetings either in person or virtual (ideally twice a month, but at least once a month) to engage hub members and plan ahead. Meetings should accommodate or overcome barriers of participation such as costs, transportation, location, dates, times and cultural and/or religious practices.
-
Supporting the hub to implement at least one project per year that meets our project criteria and improves the lives of people outside the hub. They work closely with the Impact Officer.
-
Integrating community representatives and beneficiaries into the hub’s vision and projects.
-
Facilitating fair and transparent elections to identify a new Curator and Vice-Curator according to the elections guidelines. They work to coordinate a smooth and complete leadership transition.
-
Completing the Curatorship Half-Term Review and Hub Assessment Survey.
-
There is even more that a Curatorship can do to transform their hub into a trusted partner for impact. Refer to the hub growth guide for additional ways to maximize your hub's collaboration within the Global Shapers Community and the World Economic Forum network
Why run for Curator or Vice-Curator? What are the responsibilities?
While the Curatorship brings big responsibilities, it also brings special rewards. By becoming a Curator or Vice-Curator, you join a powerful network of leaders who have the vision, values, character and competence to shape a better world. You will also:
-
Develop your leadership with the ongoing 1:1 support of Global Shapers HQ
-
Undergo hub leadership training at the Annual Curators Meeting
-
Have access to five modules of the unique Curatorship Curriculum focused on the best practices of hubs and hub leaders worldwide
-
Focus on two dimensions of leadership: self and others. This journey starts with understanding your motivations, values and desire to lead and understand the perspectives of others. You will be pushed out of your comfort zone and discover who you are as a leader and what you stand for. Building on this foundation, you will learn to mobilize individuals, hubs and communities - especially volunteers.
